"Colored Notes"
The "Colored Notes" was a column that ran in the Lexington Herald from 1919 to 1937, in the Danville Messenger in 1932-33, and in the Danville Advocate-Messenger, from October 1942 to April 1968. It was the only outlet for social news for the African American community, as the only news the newspapers printed for Blacks was negative -- shootings, arrests, etc. These notes contain birth, marriage, death, and social announcements which are a rich source of genealogical and historical information. Each file below contains all the notes from the time period indicated and is prefaced with an every-name index listing in which column the name appears. Files that are linked are up and online; others are coming soon. |
