South Portland, ME, Shipyards
During World War II

This website was originally designed in 2002, but is being revised and updated.
As with an old house being restored or renovated, there will be some parts of it that will not work yet.
In particular, many of the links are now 24 years old and may not work.  Patience is urged.

The northern part of So. Portland, Me, was transformed from a quiet residential neighborhood into a bustling shipyard between 1941 and 1945.  As many as 30,000 people worked at the yards during those years.  Arthur J. Denis of Westbrook, ME, my father, was one; so was my late ex-father-in-law, Harold F. Bent of Gorham, ME.

This website is dedicated to them, their fellow workers, and the magnificent work they all produced.
